Contents and Double Page Spread Analysis: NME & Mojo

NME: Contents Page

  • There is a heading at the top of the page saying; ‘This Week’ along with the magazine NME logo. Below the heading there is a date of its issue so you know if you have the up to date copy.
  • There is a column with different headings for different topics at the Right hand side of the page. There is then the information below the headings of the different pages along with the page number.
  • There are two different pictures on the page. They are relating to the short article on the page. The pictures are rather large and take up more than a quarter of the page itself. The pictures are also in the middle and just below the heading; there is also an article relating to the pictures underneath.
  • There is a bold red box below the columns which tells of the UK’s no.1 gig guide. It is the first time the magazine has done this as it says ‘starts’. It is in bold because it is exclusive to this magazine; no other magazines are doing this as of yet.
  • There is an article below the pictures relating to them. There is also a heading which tells us it is to do with the band Oasis. The article is rather short but is probably a shocking moment as it is the very first thing that people will read. Also there is the little sub heading near the picture saying ‘the moment that’.
  • There is an advert at the bottom of the page and is placed just below the article. It tells people that if they subscribe then they will save money. This may introduce new buyers to the magazine as they want to save money and not necessarily want to buy the dearest magazine.
  • There is a brand index which tells people of the different brands in the magazine which readers may find useful.

NME: Double Page Spread

  • The design is quite simplistic as there is just one large picture which takes up the first half of the page and the bold heading is also at the bottom of the page. It is easy to see is it is quite large and the contrast in colour between the writing and the background makes it easy to notice.
  • There is a page number and a logo at the end of the text which shows that the article is finished. The date is also at the bottom of the page so you can see when it was issued.
  • The article is typical as it is written in columns. There is also a large quote in the middle of the columns so people can read the quote first and then decide whether they want to read the article or not. The article begins with a bold letter which is bigger than the writing itself. The article is plain black and white which gives it a further simplistic look.
  • There is a heading before the article which tells us a little more about what it is about; the background behind the article.

Mojo: Contents Page

  • There is the magazine logo at the top of the page and then a line underneath it. The logo is in bold black and is very noticeable to the reader. It is also in the same style as it is on its front page.
  • There are different headings of what is featured in the magazine below this. The headings are in Red and the article titles are in black along with the page numbers. The two different colours are used to show the different articles in the magazine.
  • There is a small article at the bottom at the page which is about something different. It is away from everything else so the reader can tell that it is about a different subject. The writing is also in black and white which makes it look quite simplistic.
  • There are many pictures on the first part of the page and they take up around half of the page. It is made into a sort of collage with different pictures overlapping. They relate to what is going to be in the magazine. There is writing in the different boxes which tells us a little about the picture. The writing is in white but put against a dark background so the reader can see.
Mojo: Double Page Spread

  • The double page is dominated by pictures. One half is dominated by a full picture with a fact box. The large pictures are also to show the difference of before and after and the time passing. One of the pictures is also in black and white.
  • The article is in the middle it is just one large column with other information in the other two boxes on either side of the double page. They also use bold red boxes against the plain background to highlight important points or quotes.
  • The article is different to the one before as the one before is more simplistic. It uses big pictures so it takes up more space and their is not a lot of writing. It is also quite plain with only black and white writing which doesn't make it look very exciting.
